Nothing Happens By Itself
It takes courage to be humble and humility to be truly courageous.
Humility exposes us to abuse, neglect, derision and more, sometimes even from friends and family. In a better world, it would not be that way, but it IS that way and there's nothing we can do about it. It takes courage to be humble anyway, and expose ourselves to those things.
Courage requires us to see ourselves as we truly are and not as the center of the universe. That takes humility; for humility is truth, and it is true that none of us is the center of the universe.
It makes me wonder what other virtues compliment and strengthen each other. I know that they all do, to some extent, just as vices exacerbate all the other vices in us. But humility and courage are such an obvious pair. Can anyone think of other pairs of virtues that have such a direct relationship? If so, please let me know. I would like to discuss it. I would like to know more.
